About Us

The Department of Statistics and Community Development in the Emirate of Sharjah was established in 2014 under the Emiri Decree no. (7) as the official statistical office in the Emirate, with the extended responsibility of collecting and analyzing data on all sectors of society. Prior to 2014, the Statistical Centre was established in 2012 under the Emiri Decree no. (4), which was responsible for data collection. The data collected is safeguarded as per the data confidentiality clause contained in Articles 10 and 12 of Law (4), 2014.

DSCD’s mandate is twofold: it acts as both data producer and data-user. As a data producer, DSCD strives to collect reliable, accurate, timely, and specific data about different sectors of society. As a data user, DSCD analyzes data in terms of causality analysis, studying prevalent social, economic, and demographic issues. Data is also shared with relevant government entities, both at the federal and local level, for developing strategies, policies, developmental planning, and to aid in decision-making.

The type of data collected at DSCD includes socio-economic data, population and demographic data, social and economic data, environmental data, and health data. The data is collected from different levels of society including; individuals, households, and the community at large. We strive to make our data as accessible as possible for the general public in order to inform their decision-making.

DSCD uses a results-based management approach to implement projects and strategies with other entities, and for monitoring and evaluating results. This is a circular process where intervention is flexible and where outcomes are based on results rather than achievements. Moreover, data is regularly updated and monitored, and international standards and best practices are applied in the work of DSCD, as highlighted in DSCD’s vision and mission.
